This film explores the idea of absence. I wanted to capture the essence of my late grandfather through the memories of my grandmother. Over a series of interviews with a combined recording time of 6 and a half hours, my grandmother told the story of their life together. For me this was very moving as I saw my grandfather in a completely new light, the challenge was trying to cut down the complete recording time into a 5 minute narrative, prioritising the information that helped progress the narrative and capture the 'essence' of him. Equally there was no video footage of him and very few photos so therefore I used cinematic metaphors and recreations to tell the story.
